Probably explains the lack of a constitution too. No one dares to try and document it!

I assumed this link would have been one of the top comments! All the other links in this thread combined don't shed light on the topic nearly as well as CGP Grey's video.
Thats about United Kingdom, but Ireland is mentioned https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNu8XDBSn10
This explains the complexities on the "british isles" quite well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNu8XDBSn10
CGP Grey has a great video: "The Difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England Explained" which covers a lot of this.

Thank you so much for the introduction to CGP Grey. Watching 'The Difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England Explained' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNu8XDBSn10

The line, "While you can call them all British it's not recommended as the four countries generally do not like each other." hooked me, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. Rest of my day is gone watching these videos, I'm down the rabbit hole.

The UK situation with its dependencies is very complex. I found this short video helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNu8XDBSn10

Yes that video is excellent. (Also: "with its dependencies")

Posting youtube links without explaining why anyone should watch them is not considered useful by most HN people. I looked at the start, and it didn't seem useful for the issue at hand, which (to me) is that the Republic of Ireland and the landmass named Ireland are two different things.

The Republic of Ireland doesn't include Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom.

The landmass named Ireland does.

I'm surprised to see that you are still missing that, but, ok, as an American maybe I'm not really understanding what's going on.

Most people on HN dont find snotty attitudes helpful either.

5 mins of witty, brilliant lowdown on The Difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England Explained.

Others have already chimed in here, but I honestly can't remember a CGP Grey video that I wasn't thoroughly entertained by, even when I already knew all of the facts presented.

For amusement's sake, I really enjoy his videos on geography, such as (his first video ever) this one on the UK (which I guess might need updating soon?):

https://youtu.be/rNu8XDBSn10

or this one on Scotland:

https://youtu.be/p3HnMLq8m9U

or my favorite geographical video, on the Vatican:

https://youtu.be/OPHRIjI3hXs

That said, they're all pretty great, so I'd just start with this list of all his videos in ascending order:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNu8XDBSn10&index=1&list=PLq...

> having the UK, Wales and Scotland all on the list is somewhat confusing

Why? UK is comprised of countries with their own legislatures (with devolved and varying powers). England doesn't. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have parliaments, and their own politicians so need an entry. They all elect MPs to the Westminster UK parliament as well. Just as all these areas elect EU MEPs too.

I am aware of the UK having sub-national parliaments - my point is that the US has more than 50 legislatures and both Australia and Canada have around 10 each. Are these legislatures also going to be stuffed into the list, or will the legislatures be browseable in some form of heirarchy?

He has another on why "how many countries are there?" is a difficult question [1].

Sure, but the Australian and US States similarly have parliaments with strong jurisdictions - stronger than those of the Scotland, Wales and NI parliaments, because the national legislatures in the federations have only limited scope.
A viral video (https://youtu.be/rNu8XDBSn10) that turned into a whole career.

So you make a living off of publishing on youtube? I was always fascinated by this model.
Orthanc
Yes: the ads you see on YouTube are split between the creator and YouTube. Now that I'm a larger channel there is patronage and sponsorships as well, but it all got started with building an archive of popular videos.
ionwake
Can I ask how many videos you made, until you started to make enough cash, for example to pay the rent? Thank you.
Orthanc
I don't remember the number of videos, but my goal was 200,000 subscribers before leaving my day job. Subscribers aren't views (and they mean less now than they did when I started) but that was my estimate on how big of a base I needed to be confident it would work. 200,000 subscribers wasn't paying me as much as I earned as a full-time teacher but I knew the lines would cross.
vblord
Just curious, how many videos do you upload? From what I am seeing, maybe 5 minute video 1 per month? How long do you spend on this in total (research, sponsors, video editing, etc...)?

Again, this is amazing to me that people can make a living off of youtube.

Orthanc
It's about a video every six weeks, but I am not a typical YouTuber in this regard.
pkd
Are you really CGP Grey? If you are, it is amazing that I run into you on HN.
jtrtoo
Ain't HN grand?
Orthanc
Yup it's me. Not a frequent poster on HN, mostly a lurker.
Relatedly unrelated.. if you want to understand the relationship between Great Britain, the UK, Scotland, England, etc.. then this CGP Grey video helps a lot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNu8XDBSn10
> So what is the IoM status? Is it a separate country?

This mostly explains things:

This video (5m long) might explain a few things

Thanks. OMG. What a mess.

It looks like a system of whatever works and not upsetting an apple cart.

Ireland is not part of the UK, but it is part of Britain.

Northern Ireland is part of the UK, but that's a completely different country from Ireland. Being UK born or based gives you no privileges over the .ie domain at all.

The best thing to do is to watch this great, quick and witty primer on the whole thing Britain/UK/England thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNu8XDBSn10

handelaar
No, Ireland is not part of Britain.
tagawa
> Ireland is not part of the UK, but it is part of Britain.

Ireland is part of the British Isles, not Britain (which is England, Scotland & Wales).

Twirrim
Blargh.. of course, perfect time to have a brain fart :)
This is an excellent video that explains it very well - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNu8XDBSn10

My friend who worked at a travel agent in london was asked on a regular basis by US "college educated" kids on their post-college world tour if they could please buy a bus to Ireland.
