Autonomous drone navigates independently through the forest at 40 km/h
This is great. About ~6 years ago there was a story on HN from MIT titled "Self-flying drone dips, darts and dives through trees at 30 mph"[0]. It was a fixed wing drone, rather cautiously flying near a few trees. At the time my comment was:> I guess I was expecting something more like this goshawk flying through a forest, but maybe it's too much to ask for :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-_RHRAzUHM&start=100
Now 6 years later, the drone seems almost on par with the capabilities of the goshawk. Pretty amazing!

⬐ kevilleNice link. Makes you wonder what biomimicry might bring to drones in a couple of generations. Maybe in addition to a set of propeller motors, you could have a couple of servos running small deployable "fan-like fins" (or is that fin-like fans?) for fast maneuvering where just changing prop speed won't quite cut it.⬐ nkurzKiwi birds too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdUUx5FdySs(Caution: On topic, but saddest short animation ever made)

⬐ agumonkeyThe forest flight was amazing. Haa nature.ps: I wish they uploaded a 720p video of it. a slow-mo camera would have been nice too.
⬐ maxericksonThe Kottke via link also has a link to a Perigrine Falcon hunting a duck:http://kottke.org/13/05/peregrine-falcon-killing-a-duck-in-m...

The camera mounting makes it a little tiresome to watch but doesn't really make it less interesting.
