Youtube Summary
Security is one of the most critical elements of our data centers’ DNA. With dozens of data centers globally, security operations means managing a massively complex network. Follow Stephanie Wong, as she journeys to the core of a data center, to show you the six layers of physical security designed to thwart unauthorized access. She’ll meet experts along the way to explore the inner workings of the technology and systems that make Google Cloud one of the most robust enterprise risk management platforms.

Not to speak of network/power redundancy, managed hardware (like not having to prove to your ISP that their memory or disk is broken!), lots of services besides just metal...

HN is actually really in love with putting things on Hetzner, OVH and co. It works and it's cheap. But it wouldn't be a good experience when things break, and you better have really good backups and plans to fail over to another box when something bad[1] happens.

That Google DC video doesn't actually show how the data center is setup or operates. It shows all the security layers to make people feel like their data is safe (from physical attacks, not cyberattacks of course). You see more about Google Data center hard disk shredders than you do how they manage and cool their servers. The differences are more about preventing humans from getting in and access to the machines. The actual racks, cooling, etc are pretty similar in many respects. There's more redundancy in Google data centers, theoretically. But the reality is not what it might seem in terms of actual data center resilience.
