HN Theater has aggregated all Hacker News stories and comments that mention The Signal Path's video "TSP #181 - Starlink Dish Phased Array Design, Architecture & RF In-depth Analysis".
Youtube Summary
In this episode Shahriar takes a detailed look at the Starlink Satellite Dish. The dish was kindly sent by Ken who has done his own initial teardown here:

The dish is analyzed layer by layer from the radome down to individual integrated circuits. The RF design, system architecture and many aspects of the overall product are described in details. An X-Ray of the RF stack is also shown which further explores the design of the array.

It's a phased array, it uses those many little chips to do "beam steering". Check out this video by The Signal Path (a Bell Labs expert!) doing a teardown and explaning parts of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6MfM8EFkGg

For anyone interested in a teardown, Shahriar at The Signal Path is a pro and he did one here:

Highly recommended. Goes deep into the antenna design and overall components (and why it costs so much to manufacture).

There’s a pretty crazy amount of electronics in the dish. They are likely selling it at well below cost at present.

the closest thing I have ever previously seen to a starlink phased array is the flat panel phased array radar in the nose radome of an air superiority interceptor type aircraft.

The CEO just mentioned first version of the dish cost $3000 to manufacture, and it's currently down to $1500. Major goal is to reduce manufacturing cost, since they're selling the thing for $500 and taking a loss right now.
