The Joint Threat Research Intelligence Group (JTRIG), a unit in one of Britain’s intelligence agencies, is tasked with creating sockpuppet accounts and fake content on social media, in order to use "dirty tricks" to "destroy, deny, degrade [and] disrupt" enemies by "discrediting" them. In this talk, we reveal some of that content, in relation to infiltrating activists groups around the world, including during the Arab spring and Iranian revolution.

I did camera on this one. (All run by volunteers as every year).

Everyone, if you ever speak at CCC, please try to stand still. It's nigh impossible to do this picture-in-picture layout if you don't.

I grew up around TV production and ran camera at least a hundred times for dynamic speakers who dashed around the entire stage.

With the right equipment, this is very doable. You need a high quality camera head and longish arms placed a comfortable level. Here’s an example

Remember people shoot video of running, twisting basketball players in game all time.

Thanks for volunteering! I watch your videos while commuting. Really great: keeps you from getting bored and you learn something new!

Hi, we recently did a fun project for DIY tracking camera you may find interesting : Linn Photobooth (https://github.com/GistNoesis/Linn-Photobooth).

There are either non deep-learning tracking, or deep-learning tracking using open-pose.

Why do you think people don't stand still?
kaybe
They are nervous, I'd say. Especially moving your weight from left to right (in and out of the frame) does not help the presentation at all.

But sure, if you do it on purpose because you think it helps, by all means, move however you want. We will do our best to track you.

I'm mainly thinking of unconscious moving. But sure, if you are nervous due to the huge audience, you will think of other things and not that - which is why we don't approach speakers about this before their talk.

Fnoord
Makes sense, thank you. Are there ways you recommend to combat stage fright or nervousness? Is there light movement you recommend which isn't annoying for cameramen? Can the problem be solved on your side by better equipment? Cause I know a certain neurotic ADHD stand up comedian who got perfectly recorded on video on his shows (example [1])

Walking around slowly and predictably can be fine. I find it the hardest when people barely move enough so that the camera has to follow only a little bit - but wait it's fine now, oh no they moved out of the frame just enough so I have to do something - oh wait they're back..

You'd think this could be solved with the proper zoom angle but then the pros get on your case with too much headspace, unfavorable body cut lines and never forget to never film the audience.

I just talked to a speaker for tomorrow who, from the video material, assumed they'd be talking in front of maybe a hundred people. They're scheduled for room B which holds about 2000 and got a shock.. so the dimensions look quite different on the stream.

The issue can be mitigated by a better filming crew really. The mixer is really important for coordinating (when the cameras do random stuff once in a while you probably have a inexperienced mixer who uses the intercom too little). It's possible to follow the speaker well enough if the mixer gives breaks and the camera tripod settings are right for you. Special cases get an experienced crew.

Not sure about the stage fright. I think it depends on the details actually, but I'm still working on that too.

Interesting. Is this a recent problem? I mean, CCC moved to Leipzig because of more room over there, right? So I was thinking, that the rooms would be bigger due to that as well. Perhaps due to that things like stage fright occur more commonly or often and that could make it a thing to consider or train for. Maybe some kind of unbiased, informative articles or online training could be recommended.
kaybe
It was moved because the old building was demolished. Not sure if the rooms are bigger, it looks similar actually. Maybe a bit.

A guide would be good though. I'll suggest it further.

Thank you for your efforts!

While I understand the problem of tracking, it has to be said that people who move around the stage usually have a more more engaging stage presence. In contrast, people who stand rigidly at the lectern are often boring. ing, it has to be said that people who move around the stage usually have a more more engaging stage presence. Sounds like a task for OpenCV face tracking :-)

Meta, but you might have copy pasted your reply twice.. after 'boring.' the part starts again with 'ing' of 'tracking'

The HN user interface on mobile leaves something to be desired.

That would probably require a lot of work and testing, oh and hardware, but it's probably the right place to find people. Not sure how a computer would do with regards to the uncertainties we already struggle with, so maybe a state augmentation would the way to go. Hm...

The other issue I spread discussed at length in a sibling comment.

Are hackers the last bastion between us little people and the totalitarian state envisioned by the British people?

Because it seems that we've got a lot of work to do. How people are okay with their taxes paying for things like JTRIG is really dis-heartening ..

Pretty interesting, good investigation.

The whole thing seems remarkably amateur and low effort. Their slide of limitations is revealing - lack of language skills, no real process for handoffs over vacation times, use of a dedicated URL shortener that only GCHQ use instead of the many commercially available ones - these seem like basic errors. I find it hard to believe that this was a well funded effort or even achieved much at all.

It also casts some new light on the "Russian bots are taking over" establishment meltdown. Projection much? Obviously western government figures know their own staff are doing this sort of thing, so they assume that Russia is too and the lack of hard evidence of the type shown in this talk is neither here nor there.

Fnoord
Reminds me etching of "VAX - when you care enough to steal the very best" on certain DEC MicroVAX machines [1]. Cause they knew the Russians were copying. I also remember the US government warning for external government interference, using the Internet. At that time they were already onto it themselves. Its difficult for us citizens to decide who's ahead of the game. We'll only know it in hindsight.

To be fair, "russia" spent $100K on facebook ads and won the election for Trump. /s

If you pay attention, it's obvious there are some russian, chinese, saudi, etc manipulation on social media. But the vast majority of the manipulation and "fake news" on social media is pushed by the british, israel, EU, Canada, etc. Not only that, their social media manipulation is also backed by the establishment media.

How much "Prince Harry marries X" and british royal family is all over the media and social media along with the sock puppets manipulating the conversation?

gandhium
Assume? There's tons of info on Russian troll factories, even from insiders who took part in pushing 'Russkiy mir' agenda around.
