This is a philosophical talk. It deals with ideals, aims, and ways of approximating those. It deals with practical constraints and risks. It gives short examples. It presents a perspective of what drives the evolution of C++. What is C++ and what it must become over the next years for its success to continue? This involves both social and technical points. Towards the end, I discuss the direction of C++ future evolution, give some opinions, point to urgently needed new features, and discuss how to manage until they are part of the standard.

> "C++ still remains mostly a superset of C"

I think this notion is out-of-date. Have a look at this slide: https://youtu.be/_wzc7a3McOs?t=21m37s It shows how C++ has evolved away from just "C with Classes".

I agree that many C++ programmers over-abstract things.

It shows how C++ has evolved away from just "C with Classes".

I meant that C code, with few modifications, will basically work fine when compiled with a C++ compiler.

He hasn't been hiding his frustration with the committee's progress. However, when asked about that, he also said he values the democracy and committee process more than his own ideas. On the option of being a "Benevolent C++ Dictator for life", he said "Power Corrupts".
