Floppy Drive Reverb. Recording Analog Audio on Floppy Disks

Jeri Ellsworth · Youtube · 23 HN points · 2 HN comments
HN Theater has aggregated all Hacker News stories and comments that mention Jeri Ellsworth's video "Floppy Drive Reverb. Recording Analog Audio on Floppy Disks".
Youtube Summary
Jeri Ellsworth describes how she attached a floppy drive to a tape deck recorded and then played back audio. A simple circuit stepped the head automatically using the spindle index pulse. A push button was used to control the direction. The drive head wrote to more than one track at a time, causing an interesting reverb effect. ***Erasing the disk with rare earth magnets while spinning in the drive was not mentioned in the video.

Jeri Ellsworth is a wizard! A huge inspiration to me.

I always loved this floppy drive reverb she made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xpr7B-7BFP4

Jeri Ellsworth, for people who don't know, does really interesting hardware stuff.

I stay in my parent's basement so I don't have to be subjected to TSA body imaging, why would I want to do it at home?

j/k it's more of a tin-foil covered shed, but there may be some evidence that tHz radiation causes "resonance effects" resulting in DNA depolymerization:

So get the pat down folks, your genes will thank you!

She did that as a protest against airport scanners, I believe.

You are correct. It was to demonstrate they were wasting absurd amounts of money paying for these when they can be built fairly easily for quite a bit less.

I guess my point, from the links provided, is that we shouldn't be bombarding ourselves with the radiation these devices produce.
chc
It's about the same as what you get from eating a banana AFAIK. At any rate, people routinely subject themselves to much higher doses of radiation.
ubercore
It's actually higher than a Banana Equivalent Dose, and you can't always directly compare radiation exposure like that based on dosage.
chc
Is it? A BED is about 0.08 µSv. From everything I've heard, the TSA machines dose you with somewhere between 0.02 and 0.08 µSv.
vwinsyee
I honestly thought that you and chc were joking about the Banana Equivalent Dose. But it turns out that it's a real concept!

Well, now I know how the Cocteau Twins made their sounds in the 80s!

When I saw the title, I recalled the sounds that the old Apple floppy drives would make: when you booted them up you could hear the chunka-chunka-chunka as the stepper motor pushed the head all the way to the outer track, and then a little scraping noise when (after the rest of the driver had been read off the outer track) the head moved to the center track to read the directory. And the farting noise it made before the console beeped and said “I/O ERROR”... those were the days... kids today, they don’t know what it was like....
