Youtube Summary
Bill reveals how "queueing theory" - developed by engineers to route phone calls - can be used to find the most efficient arrangement of cashiers and check out lines. He reports on the work of Agner Erlang, a Danish engineer who, at the opening of the 20th century, helped the Copenhagen Telephone Company provide the best level of service at the lowest price.

The very short video touches on Agner Erlang's studies on telephone block queues and how shopper wait times are reduced by having cashiers share a common queue.

An excellent video on the phenomenon from the "Engineer Guy" series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5Ri_HhziI0

And just in case you feel like killing about 20 minutes of your day, check out the rest of his videos. They are excellent.

I love his videos. I wish he would make more. The harddrive one was interesting.

The video doesn't explicitly mention this, but if you want to minimise your (perceived) relative waiting time you should choose one of the two end aisles to queue in.

It's because I'm cursed, and I always get the slowest line during checkout. It's okay, though. I make up for it by always switching to the faster lane while I'm driving.

Kidding aside, I like his way of presenting. I have an appreciation for good presentation skills, especially coming from techies/engineer types.
