Nature shows how all this works
Although this is from an investment blog (I cut them a slack) it is no for me on the on the 1st conclusion and in fact on the premise for it. Extremes do not lead to extremes in nature (extreme is relative, and hence only in the realm of human language and perception), nothing inherent in nature. And, The interplay of fire season to wet season is not causally linear as implied, there is resource management by institutions (subject to many many constraints). As for the second point, yes, compounding is a non-linear concept and we have generally poor intuition about its effects and implications. If one want to understand the rather unique position California posses due to it geographical location (in terms of wet and fire seasons) I would recommend starting with this great talk by a professional working on it for decades: M.
