Interesting topic. However:

Linus Techtips, blargh. I can't stand his format. It is unwatchable for me, so I'm out.

There is a proper story submitted here, on that CPU https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25589081

From when I need to watch a video review for some product (which are still useful for physical products where ergonomy/appereance/usability is a factor), the more time the reviewer himself appears on screen, the more useless the review. I want to watch the product, not the reviewer... Oh god.

This is why I like Wendell from Level1Techs. He's the quintessential tech guy who has really in-depth knowledge and insight coupled with a bit of bearable craziness... although I actually like Ryan more because he's basically me.

I really like Linux Tech Tips but they'd benefit from getting some savvy tech women on the team. It's a little unbalanced at the moment.
laserdancepony
Just for the sake of it?
unixhero
Because men want to have females around I suppose
jjeaff
Sure, why not?

Yes. Just the same as it's no longer OK to have a conference full of white dudes as speakers, it's no longer appropriate to have a tech TV show that's full of white dudes as the cast.

Have you not tuned in to the way the community is thinking about public entertainment that is loaded with white dude bros to the exclusion of all else?

Linus has zero women on his TV show except his wife and occasional women who act as hapless stooges.

Or are you not arguing with me but instead arguing with the injustice of the social movement towards a less white dude bro oriented media industry?

I don't think it's the sort of thing that warrants the community to pile on and attack Linus - I hate cancel culture, but all I said is that it would be better if there were some savvy women on his show - i.e. greater than zero. He doesn't have to have 50/50 representation, just one woman would make a difference.

LTT is a big TV show with millions of viewers .... it's in LTT's interests to avoid being targeted by the cancel culture machine.

There aren't many savy tech women compared to men. So it's not surprising they are mostly men.
cbozeman
You should blame the Big 5 personality traits, not Linus.
jokowueu
LTT has 4 females on staff

Maxine was a reviewer previously but she quit

I find that Linus has some good content from time to time, but I can’t bare the format.

The jokes, screaming, unreal exaggerated emotions. Puts me off instantly.

Note that Linus tech review is targeting mass market consumers, not expert or semiexpert.

The craziness you mentioned is typical YouTube banter fillers. That was not only expected, they are actually useful. Otherwise the video would be unbearable. I don't expect those to be problem for the channel's main audience.

glouwbug
But that's just youtube. "Engaging content" is them yelling at us to smash the like button, and _hit the bell_
tambourine_man
Often, yes, but than you have 3blue1brown. MKBHD and Jonathan Morrison also have a more tasteful, relaxed tone.

I love hardware reviews but not this format and I don’t really care for games. I was wondering if there’s something akin to Anandtech’s style review on YouTube.

garyfirestorm
I watch savagegeese for car reviews

Was about to mention this.

In the age of countless amounts of information, where every click counts for compensation, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war abounds, for differentiation...

But he does a very good job in educating his target audience.

I have been thinking lately, because the cost of making a video is higher, there is a barrier of entry and people tends to do a much better job in research and presenting information. Comparing to blog post or mot webpage it seems we have dumped it down so much the noise are increasing while the signal are shrinking rapidly.
