Youtube Summary
I just visited my friend Jack Rubin and his well named Computerarium. Today, we are going to boot an HP 1000E (from 1976) and have it run a simple test on its paper tape reader. How hard can it be?

Needs a 2640 series graphics terminal or two with a plotter.

I used one, briefly, over thirty years ago as an intern, and it was ancient then. I was amused that its Fortran dialect was an enhanced Fortran IV. It had a multi-user, multitasking operating system. I caused some mild consternation in the laboratory by figuring out how to edit my next plot while it was running the plotting program.

The big washing-machine disk packs I think were more typical of storage for them over their lifetime than paper tape. The one I used had been kept in service because they hadn't figured out how to migrate all their data off 120MB disk packs and typical PCs still had less than 100MB of storage anyway.

HN Theater is an independent project and is not operated by Y Combinator or any of the video hosting platforms linked to on this site.
