You will be very happy with this new laptop then: https://frame.work/Every internal component has a QR code sticker on it pointing to a web page with the specs, replacements, etc.
⬐ BerislavLopacIs Framework available in a non-silver case? Ideally black or dark grey...⬐ LegitShady⬐ dskloetNot yet I don't think. They're very new and working with limited resources right now.You could potentially find some vinyl wraps for it. Dbrand sells them.
I assume that's why they wrote "excluding framework".
My personal laptop has been an Acer-C710 Chromebook for some time now. I bought it because it was inexpensive, upgradable, clearly could run linux, had an Intel (specifically non-ARM) CPU which meant that I could use nixos's binary cache for programs (non-ARM is probably somewhat less problematic today than it was in 2013). I went through several layers of rooting my Chromebook, eventually replacing the BIOS. I upgraded the RAM and (this year) replaced the HD with an SSD.But my laptop is getting old. The bezel is cracked and the screen cable seems ... ungrounded? Black isn't quite black. Still, I have been hesitant to upgrade to modern, non-upgradable laptops. But a few months ago Graham Christensen posted about running nixos on the frame.work <https://grahamc.com/blog/nixos-on-framework>. And then this guy also seems pretty excited <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rkTgPt3M4k>.
Unlike the Acer Chromebook, the frame.work laptop is not cheap. However, I'm no longer a post-doc and I am in a fortunate position that I can afford to splurge a little. So, ignoring the sunken cost of my recent SDD purchase, I decided to go ahead an place an order back at the beginning of August. The cheaper processor I ordered was shipping in October, and here we are in October.

Same! The LTT review also mentioned the screen resolution as a problem, so that might be a nice upgrade in the future. FWIW, the rest of the review was really glowing.
this one looks terrific! I saw the review made by Linus : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rkTgPt3M4k - totally got me convinced. I left Apple to System76 2 years ago, but that'd likely be my choice if I'd be doing this today...
⬐ rkangelI was waiting to read a trustworthy review, so just watched the video. Glad to hear that it's pretty good. Build quality was what I was worried about but it sounds generally good.My only other question is Linux driver support. There was a brief mention about fingerprint scanner in Linux, but I really appreciate that Thinkpads under something like Fedora just work out of the box. Hopefully Framework will have similar support - it seems like the sort of laptop linux hackers would like to be using!
⬐ nrpThe latest Fedora 34 respins (and soon Fedora 35) work out of the box with everything including the fingerprint reader. Ubuntu 21.04 supports everything but the fingerprint reader, which needs libfprint 1.92.0. There is a pretty active community of Framework Laptop users now providing tips on how to set up different distros: https://community.frame.work/c/diy-edition/linux/91

⬐ alpaca128I hope they can establish their little market for people who care about this. The fact that this video caused a 2-day hug of death on their website could be a good sign. Not sure yet whether to get this one, partially because I'd prefer an AMD chip. But Linux support might be great. Either way I'm in Europe, so it'll take a while.
> gluing everything together enables more compact, durable designsMaybe a tiiiiiiiny bit more compact, but definitely not more durable. Frame.work can apparently produce easily serviceable, rather thin designs of laptops that are even modular (www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rkTgPt3M4k). This is way thinner than my 2008 era HP and thinner than my 2021 era Lenovo.
As far as phones go, the PCBs are a tiny part of the phone (The cpu, ram, storage combined are less than 1/2 of the phone surface area and probably less than 1/4 of the volume) so gluing them together doesn't even get you much. You might get a _small_ bit by soldering in the battery in the sense that you then don't need a "box" for the removable battery, but that is a small amount of space compared to the battery itself.
⬐ TheParkSharkIs the only purpose of the glue to make it harder to disassemble? If nothing else changed but glue wasn’t added would the product still function and look the same?⬐ mrguyoramaIt makes waterproofing a bit easier I think
