Hacker News Stories and Comments
All the comments and stories posted to Hacker News that reference this video. The notion of considering a country “developing” or “developed” is quite outdated. It made some sense fifty or forty years ago but today most countries are somewhere in between and it’s not really possible to group countries into two groups “developed” and “developing” anymore.Hans Rosling has made some interesting talks on this. Worth watching.
His TED talks are well worth watching too:* http://www.ted.com/talks/hans_rosling_shows_the_best_stats_y...

⬐ EvgenyThere goes my weekend! Thank you so much.⬐ TeMPOraLI strongly recommend those talks. The 'magic washing machine' talk is beautiful. One of my favourite quotes of all time comes from it.
And what we said, my mother and me, "Thank you industrialization. Thank you steel mill. Thank you power station. And thank you chemical processing industry that gave us time to read books."
⬐ agumonkeyIIRC that talk had a powerful ending (beside that quote).⬐ zo1Are you referring to the one where he performs sword eating? (I kid you not)
TED Talk Hans Rosling: Let my dataset change your mindset:Religion has very little to do with the number of babies per woman. All the religions in the world are fully [able] to maintain their values and adapt to this new world. </quote> http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/hans_rosling_at_state.html
⬐ genwinYes religions can adapt, but of course they don't want to and needn't, so Rosling's reasoning isn't convincing. Utah has the highest birth rate in the US. I doubt that has very little to do with Mormonism.⬐ flyinRyanHave you been to Utah? There isn't much else to do there...
I'd recommend watching all the TED talks by Hans Rosling, they are pretty awesome and eye opening, in particular these:http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/hans_rosling_shows_the_best...

Guns, Germs and Steel has already been mentioned in this thread, but there are two Hans Rosling talks that also provide some interesting data points:The rise of the Asian economies: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/hans_rosling_asia_s_rise_h...
Talking to foreign aid policy workers: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/hans_rosling_at_state.html
