Hacker News Stories and Comments
All the comments and stories posted to Hacker News that reference this video.⬐ rhn_mk1Source article: http://www.deepskycolors.com/archivo/2018/02/13/capturing-St...I'm disappointed with space.com. All they did is reword the original article and while they gave credit, they didn't provide a direct source link. The notice "Original article on Space.com." is just cherry on top.
⬐ johnnyfived⬐ dangNot only that, it's purposefully written in a way that minimizes direct references to the original blog post, to make it seem as though Space.com actually took the time to do the interviews or any investigating for their research. This quote from the article that quoted the astronomer makes it seem like they were the ones who took his statement personally, instead of ripping it off from his blog post.
"Andreo spent hours trying to figure out why he couldn't find it before giving up and heading home. 'By 5:15 a.m., I felt it was enough. Twilight was coming soon, plus I wanted to avoid the rush hour traffic back home, so I packed and left,' he wrote."
This is extremely slimy.
⬐ foscoI may have something to learn but is this not direct plagiarism?⬐ None⬐ hux_None⬐ maxericksonThey could have gotten permission.⬐ gt_⬐ sdoeringAsking would risk provoking a formal denial or getting served an exchange request from the source.During my time as a low level writing bee at a so called journalistic site in Germany that was my whole job:* Find something that could potentially get people to click. * Write the whole piece with own words. * Never link to the original. * Shove as many ads into people's face. * Make money.
You can probably understand why I changed the path of my "career".
⬐ NoneNoneThanks for the link. Interesting read. Had no idea about the gear and work involved.⬐ VMGthey also managed to make the content glitchy and slow to load⬐ tariqjmalikHi rhn_mk1,This is Tariq Malik, managing editor at Space.com, and thank you for note regarding the missing link for photographer Rogelio Bernal Andreo in our recent piece. That was an oversight on our part and we have added the link here: https://www.space.com/39699-astrophotographer-spots-elon-mus...
Mr. Andreo actually reached out directly to Space.com to share his video with our team via our submissions system, and asked that we consider showcasing it in a future story after giving us permission to use his video and comments.
Mr. Andreo did, however, mention that he was in the process of updating his website and asked that we link to his Facebook page in the image credits. And we did so.
I just wanted to reach out to let you know that Mr. Andreo did give Space.com full permission to use both his video and blog post as sources to share his story.
Thank you so much for your time and your interest in space. We’re happy you enjoyed the story.
Sincerely,
Tariq Malik Space.com managing editor [email protected]
⬐ rhn_mk1Hi,thank you for making the clarification. My initial impression is clearly wrong now - you got author's permission after all. However, the reaction to your article was not malicious - it was caused by the fact that you didn't let the readers know what was happening behind the scenes. As a result, the article looked dishonest.
I don't feel guilty for pointing out the missing info, but I acknowledge I misjudged you.
