Amazon Summary
Girard and Lambot spent four years exploring the notorious Walled City of Kowloon (Hong Kong), before it's final clearance in 1992. With over 320 photographs, 32 extended interviews, and essays on the City's history and character, this reprint is not only an informative glimpse of a now vanished landmark but a sensitive and penetrating portrait of a unique community.

Off topic, but you should get this if you see it for cheap.

It's amazing.

If you were ever looking for a coffee table book that may ensnare a guest's attention if they choose to pick it up and 'glance' through it, City of Darkness is one of the best. Unfortunately, it is now a collector's item now (hundreds of dollars)

Note: There is a 2nd edition coming out soon (via Kickstarter)

Have you seen the book "City of Darkness"? (http://www.amazon.com/City-Darkness-Life-Kowloon-Walled/dp/1...). It's the best photoessay I know on a place that doesn't exist anymore. One of the more interesting parts of that Wikipedia article is that William Gibson visited the Kowloon Walled City for inspiration.

That's...erm...outside a hacker's budget.

We spent less on an Oculus and a Leap.

The revolution will not be televised!

(it will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime HD, or as this nice 3-disc BluRay set)

You don't find too many details about Kowloon floating around, which is a shame since it was quite a unique settlement.

The best source of information about it is probably a photo essay called "City of Darkness" (http://www.amazon.com/City-Darkness-Life-Kowloon-Walled/dp/1...) which is frequently out of print, but which I highly recommend if you can snag a copy. It's a fascinating historical document in its own right, and one of the few reliable sources of information about the walled city, which is why it's referenced so heavily in the Wikipedia article.

This is the best footage I've seen. It has interviews, commentary, and english subtitles.
