Amazon Summary
With his distinctive clarity and wit, "Bhante G" takes us step by step through the myths, realities, and benefits of meditation and the practice of mindfulness. We already have the foundation we need to live a more productive and peaceful life — Bhante simply points to each tool of meditation, tells us what it does, and how to make it work. This expanded edition includes the complete text of its bestselling predecessor, as well as a new chapter on the cultivation of loving kindness, an especially important subject in today's world.

It is not because it does not even claim to be science. The often associated religious or/and esoteric part is something, putting me off for years (it still does). But the thing itself has a quite rational essence. Helpful for me:

At the end it comes also to dukkha and other Buddhist concepts I don't care much about. But before, it served me very well in his quite accessible approach to what I would call 'mind cleansing'.

On-topic: In my opinion the whole thing is nothing for very young people, in particular not for children.

Did you ever tried meditation (I recommend zen style sitting, aka zazen)?

There is some nice, simple and to the point books about it, and for me it is something that really helps with concentration, sadness and focus.

"Mindfulness in Plain English"

It's a great book that is easy to read and explains why and how.

That book is amazingly clear and concise. Its all about algorithms. Buddhism is truly the religion of computation.

I have the un-updated-and-expanded edition, and it is excellent. So is Buddhism Plain and Simple http://www.amazon.com/Buddhism-Plain-Simple-Steve-Hagen/dp/0...

Both of these books are great. After those, the book "Seeking the Heart of Wisdom" is recommended for those who want more of the whole picture.

I was about to say the same thing. The entire book is available online, for free:
