Ask HN: Learning PHP Suggest Book
http://www.amazon.com/dp/0672329166This is "the" php book that everybody uses to learn php and mysql. It's also the book I used years ago. It covers both php and mysql, which is good because both are consistently used together.
⬐ vicks711Thanks will buy this book.

Ask HN: What are you working on today?
I applaud your efforts, but those tutorials are old and crusty. Please get a good book or two.http://www.amazon.com/Learning-MySQL-JavaScript-Step-Step/dp...

Don't buy both, too much overlap. Just pick the one you like. The latter is long, but worth it. I've got more recommendations if you're interested.
⬐ mitchellhislopI also recommend the second one.Not to hijack, but setting up a local server (MAMP or XAMP) and building/breaking things has helped me in learning a few languages. Its worth a night to do it.

What programming language should I start with?
Do want to learn Web programming? PHP is probably the easiest programming language to learn for server-side web programming. I've read several books on PHP and looked over a bunch, and a lot are pretty good, but one of the best is this one: http://www.amazon.com/PHP-MySQL-Development-Developers-Libra...
⬐ jeyPHP is awful.⬐ mudge⬐ rmsIt might be awful but it works well and is easy to learn.⬐ dfrankeYes, but it'll teach you terrible habits.⬐ mudgeLike what?⬐ dfrankeDumping things into global variables. Using regexes to hammer anything vaguely resembling a nail. Thinking in for loops when you should be thinking in higher-level abstractions.⬐ jamongkadThat may have been the PHP of old and sadly it is still practiced up to this day. But I'm telling you man PHP5 and it's implementations will blow alot of criticisms out of the water.come on, let's not get in the habit of modding someone down because we disagree with them.⬐ portLANI'm modding it down to save anyone from being misled into PHP.
