Getting To Yes, if you haven't read it, might be a good read for you. It's specifically about negotiating, but in general, the theme of the book is mutually beneficial arrangements are vastly superior to one sided arrangements.I've been in similar situations to the one you described and I wish I had some of the knowledge and skills I have now. I could have helped the dude out and negotiated for some more money while doing it.

"And most of us start with zero training."I take from this that my life is atypical since both I and my three daughters took up negotiation training at about the age of 3 and worked hard to improve our skills from then on :-)
I liked the article, its true life is negotiation be it with your spouse, your partners, your kids, or even the taxi driver. I think a good take away is that if you have never considered all the negotiating you do, you might think about picking up a couple of books on it.
I can recommend "Getting to Yes" http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Yes-Negotiating-Agreement-With... as a great place to start.
For a really good primer in basic negotiations, take a look at Fisher & Ury's Getting to Yes (http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Yes-Negotiating-Agreement-With...).It's a quick read but very useful, and these guys are respected in the field of negotiation.
⬐ joshkaufmanBargaining For Advantage by G. Richard Shell (http://www.amazon.com/dp/0143036971/) and 3D Negotiation by David Lax and James Sebenius (http://www.amazon.com/dp/1591397995/) are even better than Getting to Yes, IMO.
Getting to Yes is a pretty classic negotiation book:http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Yes-Negotiating-Agreement-With...

⬐ jyothiThank you. Got the book and read it through. Fantastic.⬐ symbioticIn the best class I took in all of high school we read this book cover to cover. It can be a little bit repetitive but as soon as I read the title of this post I immediately thought of this book.
"Getting To Yes" by Roger Fisher http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Yes-Negotiating-Agreement-With...
⬐ sethgAs a sort of sequel to "Getting to Yes", I recommend Shell's "Bargaining for Advantage": http://www.amazon.com/Bargaining-Advantage-Negotiation-Strat...
http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Yes-Negotiating-Agreement-With...the best book on negotiation i've read. recommended to me by a vc who was a former professional negotiator. it's a great book and especially useful for founders raising money.
The best book on negotiation is Bargaining for Advantage by G. Richard Shell from Wharton. I would reading Getting to Yes first to get the basics though.http://www.amazon.com/Bargaining-Advantage-Negotiation-Strat...

⬐ davidwThink these books are of much help to someone who isn't already good at bargaining? They look ripe for the 'squeezed books' treatment:> Focusing on six key psychological leverage points...
Should be easy to summarize.
